The Mini-MAZE procedure is a minimally invasive alternative to MAZE surgical ablation for atrial fibrillation (afib). In afib, rapid, irregular electrical impulses cause the heart to beat inefficiently, increasing the risk for heart attack and stroke. In the upper chambers of the heart, scar tissue is created in a pattern as a pathway for electrical impulses. This pathway disrupts and prevents irregular electrical signals that cause afib. Rather than traditional, open heart surgery, the Mini-MAZE can be done with small incisions and a camera.
An appointment with a cardiovascular surgeon requires a referral from your cardiologist or primary care provider.

How it works:
- You will be placed under anesthesia and your doctor will make tiny incisions for the instruments.
- Your doctor will guide the instruments with a tiny camera to the heart's upper chambers.
- An energy source will flow through the pulmonary veins and create the "maze."
- The scar tissue will form, blocking electrical impulses that cause afib.
- Your Heart Team will closely monitor your heart rhythm.
